The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) manages a national initiative called Firewise USA. This is an important framework that assists groups of residents in a neighborhood to collaborate on efforts to reduce wildfire risk – both through education and specific actions. Key to this are steps related to home hardening and defensible space.
The Firewise USA initiative has multiple benefits, including but not limited to:
Helps residents better protect their homes and properties
Potential qualifications for certain types of insurance discounts
Create a “community” effort related to reducing wildfire risk
Voluntary participation
There are other benefits as well, the most obvious being that if you participate, you’ll reduce the risk of losing your home to a wildfire.
The NFPA’s Firewise USA program isn’t exclusive – the California Fire Safe Council is also useful and important, but has some different requirements. To learn about becoming a Fire Safe Council, visit this page.
